Some ingredients bring a long history to a modern formula. Ashwagandha is one of them.
Included in LÉ DETOX as Withania Somnifera (Ashwagandha) Root Oil, this botanical connects our blend to a tradition of plant-based care. Its story also offers an opportunity to understand how an ingredient’s form shapes what we can expect from it.
What is ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha, botanically known as Withania somnifera, is an evergreen shrub found in parts of India, Africa, and the Middle East. It has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic medicine, a traditional medical system originating in India.
Today, it appears in everything from supplements to skin-care formulas. But a root extract taken orally and a root oil applied to the skin are different preparations. Their effects should not be treated as interchangeable.
Why it has a place in our blend
LÉ DETOX brings botanical ingredients into a simple, modern body-care ritual. Ashwagandha’s heritage fits that philosophy, connecting the formula to a broader history of intentional plant use.
Alongside castor oil, milk thistle seed oil, and our other ingredients, ashwagandha root oil forms part of a blend designed for gentle application and massage. Its inclusion reflects our interest in bringing traditional botanicals into everyday care, with a clear understanding of what research can and cannot tell us.
What does research say about ashwagandha and skin?
Topical ashwagandha research is still developing. One small randomized study evaluated a lotion containing 8% standardized ashwagandha root extract over 60 days and reported improvements in several measures of facial skin quality.
That study examined a specific extract, concentration, and lotion. It did not test the root oil used in LÉ DETOX or our finished blend. The findings are an interesting area of exploration, rather than proof that every product containing ashwagandha delivers the same benefits.
Why is ashwagandha associated with stress and rest?
Much of ashwagandha’s current popularity comes from research on oral preparations. Some have shown potential benefits for stress and insomnia, although studies have often been small and have used different formulations. These findings do not establish that applying ashwagandha root oil to the navel lowers cortisol, balances hormones, or improves sleep.
Within your LÉ DETOX routine, the invitation to slow down comes from the ritual itself. Gentle massage, a few unhurried breaths, and a pause at the end of the day create space to give your body attention.
Make the ritual your own
Shake before use, apply several drops in and around your navel, and massage gently into the skin as directed. You might pair that moment with journaling, breathwork, or simply putting your phone aside.
Ashwagandha is one part of the formula. The time you make for yourself is what makes the ritual yours.
